Date Posted: 6/5/2012
Charlotte United Futbol Club’s Coach Clint Irwin has also been starring on the field as a goalkeeper for the Charlotte Eagles. This past Tuesday, Irwin and the Eagles shut out FC Dallas of Major League Soccer 2-0 to advance to the round of sixteen of the 2012 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Irwin is expected to start when the Eagles face the San Antonio Scorpians of the North American Soccer League in San Antonio, TX on Tuesday, June 5 at 8:30 pm EST. The winner will play the winner of Chivas USA (Major League Soccer)–Carolina Railhawks (NASL) in the quarterfinals.
Irwin had an outstanding game in goal for the Eagles against FC Dallas. The Eagles were under pressure early and Irwin’s steady presence helped keep FC Dallas off the board. The Eagles scored in the 43rd minute when Trinidad and Tobago International Darryl Roberts headed home a cross from Nathan Thornton (Clemson University). FC Dallas pushed forward in the second half but Irwin and the Eagles were able to withstand the pressure. The Eagles upset was cemented in second half stoppage time as Roberts and Thornton combined on a counter attack goal. Roberts slid the ball across to Thornton breaking in from the right flank and Thornton hammered home a shot to the lower left corner from the top of the box.
Irwin also recorded a shutout in the previous Cup game on Tuesday, May 22 in El Paso, TX when the Eagles defeated the El Paso Patriots of the Premier Development League 1-0. In the first half Irwin took away a sure goal by extending to save a shot heading to the upper corner.
The Charlotte Eagles return home to USL Pro League action on Saturday, June 16 against the Richmond Kickers at 8 pm at Charlotte Christian. Prior to the game, the Charlotte Lady Eagles host the Atlanta Silverbacks in W-League action at 5:30 pm. Visit www.charlotteeagles.com for ticket info.
